Wales at the World Championships

CEWC-Cymru ensures that Wales is represented at the World Schools Debating Championships each year. This global tournament includes over 30 national teams and takes place in a different country each year.

Team Wales comprises 5 debaters, chosen from participants in the Wales Schools Debating Championships.

Students have two possible routes to representing Wales:

  • Debaters selected as an Outstanding Individual Debater (at a regional round or later knock-out round) can take part in our Selection Day, held in Cardiff at the end of November. Six or more debaters will be shortlisted for the final stage of the selection process, a Training Weekend held shortly afterwards.
  • The national champions go straight through to the Training Weekend stage (and are required to attend the Selection Day as non-competitors).

CEWC-Cymru has taken a Welsh team to the World Championships every year since 1991, and has twice reached the quarter-finals. Our parent body, the Welsh Centre for International Affairs, hosted the tournament in 1995 and 2006.
