Philosophy for Children
CEWC-Cymru believes that being a responsible global citizen goes hand in hand with the ability to think critically and creatively.
Since 2004, we have promoted the Philosophy for Children (P4C) classroom method to help students develop such skills.
We offer a number of services for schools in this area:
- Training for teachers, including P4C courses accredited by SAPERE
- Classroom demonstrations of P4C with any age group
- Thinking Citizens, a basic resource for linking P4C with Personal and Social Education (PSE)
- A list of other resources which we use in our P4C work
"An excellent programme which not only supports the teaching of PSE and ESDGC at all ages but also helps develop learners thinking and communication skills, together with the wider key skill of working with others."
Rhian Kenny, Carmarthenshire County Council
CEWC-Cymru began to explore the links between P4C and citizenship education in 2004, working with four primary schools in Blaenau Gwent for a project funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Since then, we have trained hundreds of teachers to lead philosophical discussion in the classroom, using P4C in conjunction with PSE, ESDGC and the new Thinking Skills area of the curriculum in Wales.
