The Inclusion project – active citizenship for disadvantaged students

During the Inclusion project (2005-2007), we worked with young people in Special Needs settings, Pupil Referral Units and secure units for young offenders, in order to develop their Key Skills and understanding of citizenship themes.

An innovative scheme of work evolved from this project, and is available as part of our Inclusion resources DVD. The scheme begins with 4 classroom activities, based on video and printed stimulus materials and covering the themes of empathy, children’s rights, participation and effective problem solving.

The scheme of work culminates in an animation project. Young people apply the knowledge and skills they have developed during the previous sessions to create the ending of a story using only plasticine and a webcam! Our Inclusion DVD includes the film Who Killed Simone Valentine?, plus two sets of teaching resources:

Who Killed Simone Valentine?
Our original scheme of work, designed for disadvantaged students. It uses the Simone Valentine film, which contains scenes of self-harm, intravenous drug taking and a mild sex scene.

Sioned’s Problems
The scenes in Simone Valentine may not be appropriate for all pupils. For mainstream settings, therefore, we recommend Sioned’s Problems.
