Activity
- In pairs, ask pupils to tell each other about their journeys to school and the different landmarks or landscapes that they pass.
- Ask the whole class to list some of the landmarks – churches, other schools, restaurants, playgrounds etc. – and make a class list.
- Ask pupils to draw their routes to school as a map and to mark key features.
Alternatively: hand out maps and ask pupils to draw their route to school and mark or colour in key landmarks.

- Is there anything surprising on the maps?
- Are people using the same landmarks?
- Why do some landmarks stand out more than others?
- What do some of the landmarks tell us about the local community, its history and the people in it?
Where Next:
CEWC-Cymru
- Extension activity: sort the landmarks into ‘positives’ and ‘negatives’ and ask the class to come up with some suggestions for the school council about improving the local environment.
