Time

At least 1 hour

Activity

  • In pairs, ask pupils to tell each other about their journeys to school and the different landmarks or landscapes that they pass.
  • Ask the whole class to list some of the landmarks – churches, other schools, restaurants, playgrounds etc. – and make a class list.
  • Ask pupils to draw their routes to school as a map and to mark key features.
    Alternatively: hand out maps and ask pupils to draw their route to school and mark or colour in key landmarks.
    »» This could be done in groups with a large map of the community and stickers. ««
  • Pupils can present their maps to the rest of the class, and the maps can form part of a display.

Class Discussion

  • Is there anything surprising on the maps?
  • Are people using the same landmarks?
  • Why do some landmarks stand out more than others?
  • What do some of the landmarks tell us about the local community, its history and the people in it?

Where Next:

CEWC-Cymru
  • Extension activity: sort the landmarks into ‘positives’ and ‘negatives’ and ask the class to come up with some suggestions for the school council about improving the local environment.
  • One World Conference: CEWC-Cymru’s annual event for primary school pupils on multiculturalism, taking place in a different county each year.
